Where RAINER MÜLLER-IRION still has a heart for the absolute beginner in the first volume, he presupposes his knowledge of the second volume of his duets. The stylistic spectrum is much more diverse and it goes straight to Afro- and Latin-pieces. What makes this book as appealing as the first is the fact that here is no boring practicing stuff – it‘s real music. That's how learning sounds fun and the CD attached makes it a safe and enjoyable experience. Here is some information about the individual pieces:
DAHADELIDUDAT
is a small swing tune that needs a light, easy interpretation. Watch out for a legato feeling and good triolation. Do not overphrase!
FUN KEY
is something for James Brown fans. Rhythmic precision is everything!! Practice slowly and accurately, stay relaxed. In the solo section you are on the winning side with a Minor pentatonic or Bluesscale. Here we go!
HAVANNA BLUES
combines Cuban rhythms with bebop blues harmonies. Listen to the records by and with Paquito D Rivera! Maybe a mouthful of rum or a Havana cigar will help?
LA CHICA ROMANTICA:
A Bolero rhythm and a soulful interpretation of the melody are in demand here. Lots of dynamics and a very vocal approach may help. For improvisation you can use the harmonic minor scale.
LIKE A DRUM
recalls African highlife music. Again, rhythmic accuracy is the key to this piece. For improvisation, triadic sounds with rhythmic feel are the appropriate means for the right sound.
NO USE BLUES
just a swinging blues, nothing more and nothing less.
ESTAS LOCO
means: you are crazy. Whether this refers to his duo partner or to the rhythm of the lower voice or maybe even to the composer?
FOUR TIMES THREE
combines a 12-note melody with a pedal tone that plays rhythmically a little bit crazy. Laxity, rhythmic accuracy and the courage to embark on something new are the recipe for this piece. In the improvisational section you should try to get a 12-tone sound in the upper part of the voice (do not play scales), while the lower voice selects a different pitch every 4 bars. It also does not always have to be low notes to the accompaniment. Try everything out. What's interesting and sounds like music is right.
TWO TO SIX: Here the 16-th are played in swing feel, the 8-th straight. The improvisation form is a minor blues. Minor pentatonic and Bluesskala are right for improvisation.
