Score and parts
The saxophone quartet "Monologe" comes from an early phase of theater work that merges text and music in a new way. Part of this concept is the complete independence of language and music, which opens up the possibility of listening to the quartet as a pure concert piece without having to know the theatrical context in the least. At least it should be revealed that the “monologues” revolve around two figures (a “philosophy professor and a failed artist) who monologize past each other in various ways about art.
The quartet impresses with a rhythmic drive inspired by minimalism, which is dominated by a sound almost exclusively determined by staccato. With a trick that is typical for Kurz, this sound world is relativized with a wink in the last movement by a strangely laconic break in style.
