Jakob Gruchmann's “Drei Pompfünebererszenen” for two saxophones (soprano & baritone saxophone) and clarinet choir was composed in 2019 and premiered at the Lofer Theater by Johannes Hogger, Klaus Hasholzner and the Pinzgauer Klarinettenchor under the direction of Wolfgang Schwabl. The three-movement piece deals with scenes that accompany the professional life of a mortician (called “Pompfüneberer” in Austria, from the French “pompe funèbre”). The first movement, a lamenting lament for the dead, is full of musical allusions to the funeral antiphon “In paradisum”. While the second movement is a theatrical funeral march, the third movement deals thematically with the traditional “funeral feast”.
