"Die Fledermaus" was premiered on April 5, 1874 in Vienna. It combines numerous well-known melodies and famous themes, some of which are presented in the overture, including the famous waltz. The transcription for saxophone quartet is a demanding piece, with many virtuoso sixteenth passages, especially for the soprano. Numerous changes in time, tempo and character make this overture particularly exciting - the work exudes a lot of energy and "Wiener Schmäh"!
